There may have been one more daughter, Dorothy SMITH, b. unknown.

I’m researching this family on behalf of a friend, a direct descendant. All this information was contained in an 1879 family letter she’s fortunate to possess. But that’s all she has. If you have any information on this family, or know of anyone else researching them, I’d be very grateful to learn of it.

HBH 1890 October 18 65th REGIMENT

The following story is going the rounds: – The 65th Regiment was 20
years out of sight, till at last the London Punch discovered it to be
in NEW ZEALAND.

That island (says a writer in the Sydney Morning Herald) at the time-
from 25 to 35 years ago was the very pick of stations in the British
Empire for officers without means, and men who could turn their hands
to some use when their discharges were purchased or their terms of
office expired.

The corps finding itself in such clover asked nothing better than to
be left alone-a wish which the easy-going authorities of the Horse
Guards discovered and good-naturedly complied with. The result was
that officer, non-commissioned officers, and men became a sort of
commune or mir.

The full privates were let away for months at a stretch to plough and
delve and blast, a small percentage of the earnings-so at least it was
whispered-finding its way upward, being promoted, in fact. These
knowing lads made themselves popular with the natives, too, so that in
the sixties, when trouble commenced in TARANAKI, the Maoris would bawl
out, “Lie down, ickedy-fifth; we’re going to shoot.”

No wonder the new troops that came in the wake of General CAMERON
called the 65th the “Civil Maoris,” and no wonder that many a stiff
stand-up fight in the buff behind the canteen was the result.

It is a long time since I did the research, but my records have:
Kew Record Office, WO12 Folios 8193-8197 for 1807 to 1817.
I don’t have the address for Kew but they are doubtless on-line now. WO is
the class of records that I got and the Folios contained the
Payroll/bookkeeping for the regiment. They are like great big ledgers with
six columns and tell the history of each man, as well as the “doings” of the
regiment in the REMARKS column. Each man has his own page/pages, so you
don’t have to flip from one book to the other.
It tells the amount of pay, beer rations, health, duties, transfers,
promotions, demotions, locations, etc. as well as the names of the officers.
I went to Kew in 1982 and was only able to stay there a couple of hours,
but by quick scanning through the regimental rolls I found Richard Ringer
and then got the Folios. It took a lot of fast writing and short forms, but
I found the records very clear and beautifully written.
If you can’t get there yourself, Kew has lists of researchers, but at the
time I went they did not give any recomendations, leading me to believe that
just anyone could put their name on. Perhaps you could appeal through the
Wexford List for someone who lives close enough to do the job.
I hope you are able to get these records and are as thrilled with the
information that I was.
Also, you might enquire about the Regimental Museum for the 65th, and
probably there is a History of the 65th Regt. which would give an overall
picture.

Subject: Irish in British Regiments

Dear Hugh,

THe Irish have always loved fighting and make great soldiers. Most British
Regiments had Irish in them. Irish loved fighting so much they joined other
armies and fought for other countries like Spain, France (and the French
Foreign Legion) and America. Some served in the Indian Army.

You never know what you may find when you get into those military records
but sure as eggs are eggs you will find that plenty of Irishmen are to be
found in all the Regiments. Of course there had been mass emigration of
Irish to London for many many decades looking for work and income.
Just enter Birthplace Ireland on any census and nothing else and see how
many come up in a search. I do that for NZ born too. Very interesting.

Hugh,
This is interesting as we have a written account of how one of Mary’s
antecedents was an English soldier – time span about right. There are
also Dempsey lurking in there somewhere as well, but please don’t get
excited as there is a long way to go back and prove hearsay.
Post famine, although Wexford didn’t fare too badly compared to the
west, work was still hard to come by and althougth the English were
despised I am sure there was still more fraternisation than the
Republicans would like us to believe.
It’ll be interesting to see what our more historically literate members
have to say about this.
